Azamgarh- A deeply shameful incident in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh district has once again exposed the dark underbelly of society, where caste discrimination and physical disability are mocked and exploited. In a shocking display of cruelty at Vivekanand High School and Inter College, chemistry teacher Yogendra allegedly crossed all limits of inhumanity against disabled Dalit student Indrajeet Kumar. For merely arriving 10 minutes late to class, the student was not only beaten but also had his foot trampled, and was threatened with being thrown off the terrace. During the assault, the teacher reportedly made a casteist slur, saying, "Chamar ho ke mera sweater pakad liye" (How dare a Chamar touch my sweater).
Recounting the horror in a video, Indrajeet explained that he cycles to school and his locomotor disability caused the slight delay. "As soon as I entered, sir started scolding me. I was send outside, but he let few other boys in. Later more boys came late but they all were allowed inside," Indrajeet said in a pained voice. He further revealed that when he again asked the teacher to be let in, the latter beat him on his head, face and stomach, stepped on his foot, and tried to push him off the terrace. When the student grabbed the teacher's sweater to save himself, the enraged educator hurled the casteist abuse. Other students were also called in and beaten.
According to the victim, the incident occurred recently when he arrived a bit late to class despite his disability. Struggling daily to reach school, Indrajeet questioned, "My disability caused the delay, why did I have to pay for it?" The student lodged a complaint with the police, but they allegedly scolded him and tried to brush the matter under the carpet. "We went to complain, but nothing happened. They just chased us away," he added.
The video has gone viral on social media, with journalist Piyush Rai sharing it to highlight the issue. The post has garnered thousands of views, with netizens demanding the teacher's immediate arrest. Activists and Dalit organizations have branded it a caste-based atrocity, urging the Yogi government for swift action.
