The crime had triggered widespread public outrage across Maharashtra.
The incident was reported on May 9, 2017, when the minor girl had gone to a local shop and allegedly faced assault near the appellant's house.
A three-year-old girl was sexually assaulted and brutally murdered in Kummidipoondi, Tiruvallur district. The incident has intensified public debate on women and child safety, regulation of migrant workers, and law and order under the current dispensation.
Citing the scale of the blackmail and trafficking operation, the party’s state executive committee has urged the Tamil Nadu government and the police department to immediately transfer the case to the CB-CID for a thorough probe.
Following the conviction, the victim filed affidavits stating they had settled the matter and were living together.
After a trial that lasted nearly two years, the POCSO court delivered justice to the victim, handing down a stringent punishment.
Police have since registered a case and arrested two individuals in connection with the crime.
The report revealed that despite school principal Anuj Kumar Singh being informed on August 18, no police report was filed.
Police have formed a dedicated Special Investigation Team (SIT) amid fears that the number of victims could rise significantly as the probe deepens.
The mother-in-law allegedly told her that the family's entire wealth had been acquired through these rituals and that all family members participate by removing their clothes and sitting nude for the puja.
The appeal, submitted by the Zero Tolerance to Sexual Violence (ZeTo) Campaign, has garnered the support of 30 organisations and over 200 individual signatories, including filmmakers, historians, retired civil servants, journalists, lawyers, and academics.
