Tonk- A major controversy has erupted in Rajasthan after a viral video showed former BJP MP Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria allegedly refusing blankets to Muslim women during a personal blanket distribution drive in Kareda Buzurg village, Niwai tehsil of Tonk district on February 22. In the footage, Jaunapuria is heard asking women their names, and upon learning they were Muslim (including names like Sukaran Khan, Razia, and Zubaida), he reportedly ordered aides to withhold or take back the blankets already distributed, stating that "those who abuse Prime Minister Narendra Modi have no right" to receive them.
The video shows Singh distributing blankets among a group of women. He asks one of them her name. When she gives a Muslim name, he asks his aides not to give her the blanket. He then says, "Listen to me, those who abuse (Prime Minister) Modi have no right to take (blankets). I can't help if you feel bad about it." He is then seen asking them to vacate the place.
Later in the video, some people are seen confronting the BJP leader over refusing blankets to the women. They are seen telling him the women had been waiting for hours before being asked to leave empty-handed. Singh replied that he did not want to argue before leaving the spot. Singh has claimed that he was distributing blankets in a personal capacity and no government funds were used.
Opposition leaders have strongly condemned the act as discriminatory and inhumane, accusing the BJP of promoting hatred over compassion. Harish Chandra Meena, Congress MP from Tonk Sawai Madhopur, shared the video and said Singh's conduct was condemnable and reflected a thought that would destroy the nation's social fabric.
Congress leader and former Dy CM Sachin Pilot described it as a reflection of BJP and RSS ideology, stating that hatred overshadows compassion in their approach. He called denying aid to a poor needy woman and humiliating her "extremely condemnable and unfortunate," adding that discrimination on religious grounds violates both morality and constitutional rights. He expressed disappointment that a two-time former MP showed no human sensitivity.
A tweet through the AAP official handle reads: "The BJP's hateful mindset has been exposed once again. Former BJP MP Sukhbir Singh Jaunpuria went to distribute blankets to women, but his hatred is so intense that he asked for the names of some women and refused to give them blankets because they were Muslim." Supriya Shrinate, chairperson for Congress's social media wing, shared the video and said the former MP is petty. "People were right in protesting. They should have thrown the blanket on his face," she said on X.
