Seven personnel of the Tamil Nadu Special Police (TNSP) have been suspended for being mute spectators during the killing of gangster Tillu Tajpuriya at the Tihar Prison cell.
The personnel were captured on CCTV footage not intervening as Tajpuriya was repeatedly stabbed to death by his rival gang members in the same jail.
Director General of Delhi Prisons Sanjay Beniwal wrote to Tamil Nadu Police to take action since TNSP personnel were on duty during the incident on May 2nd.
A meeting was held with Tihar Jail authorities officials. Tajpuriya's assailants reportedly cut the iron bars of the jail and improvised the bars as weapons to attack Tillu.
They abseiled to the ground floor with the help of bedsheets as the CCTV captured the incident. In a second clip that surfaced on social media, Tajpuriya was seen being taken by police officials while injured, only to be intercepted by his rivals, who attacked him with impunity in the presence of police who did little to prevent them.
The Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Tihar Jail authorities responding to a petition filed by Jagpal Singh, Tajpuriya's father, seeking their response on the matter. The court reprimanded jail authorities for failing to intervene in the situation and ordered the superintendent to personally appear in court on May 25th.
Justice Jasmeet Singh stated, "The court is unable to comprehend why no steps were taken when the entire incident was captured in CCTV installed in jail?" A jail official informed The Mooknayak that people from outside the state were employed to minimize communication between prisoners and security personnel.
