New Delhi- Calling the proposed delimitation exercise a “calculated political design,” Dundra Kumara Swamy, National President of the BC Dal, has alleged that it seeks to undermine the political future of the southern States. Addressing a meeting of caste association leaders, where he was the chief guest, Swamy said the move to increase Lok Sabha seats by 50% would result in a structural imbalance, disproportionately favouring northern States while diminishing the political weight of the South.

He contended that the proposal, if implemented without due regard to existing regional parity and demographic balance, would tilt representation heavily in favour of a few northern States. Such an approach, he argued, appears driven more by political expediency than by principles of equitable federalism. “A democracy of India’s diversity must ensure that representation does not become skewed to the extent that certain regions become politically redundant,” he observed.

Swamy further warned that a substantial rise in seats in northern States could enable the formation of a Union government without meaningful participation from southern States, thereby weakening the federal spirit enshrined in the Constitution. This, he said, could deepen political and economic disparities between regions and potentially lead to centralised, majoritarian tendencies.

Emphasising the need for balance, he urged the Union government to ensure that any delimitation exercise preserves the existing regional equilibrium and guarantees fair representation to all States. “The process must strengthen, not strain, the unity of the nation,” he added.
