MP: Dalit Student Beaten for Drinking Water from Teacher's Bottle! Case Registered Under SC-ST Act for Casteist Slurs

Bhopal: A case of alleged assault and caste-based humiliation of a Dalit student has come to light at the Government Primary School in Ukawal village, which falls under the Lukwasa outpost of the Kolaras police station area in Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh. The allegation is that an eight-year-old student drank water from the teacher's bottle when he was thirsty. Enraged by this, the teacher not only beat the student but also used casteist slurs against him. Following the incident, the student's family filed a complaint with the police, based on which a case has been registered against the accused teacher under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and other relevant sections.

According to information, this incident took place at the Government Primary School in Ukawal village. Raju Jatav, a resident of the village belonging to the Dalit community, told the police in his complaint that his eight-year-old son, Abhi Jatav, is a Class 4 student at the school. During school hours, the boy felt thirsty and drank water from the bottle of the teacher, Lokesh Sharma. It is alleged that the teacher flew into a rage over this and beat the student. The complaint also states that during the assault, the teacher humiliated the student with casteist slurs, causing the child mental anguish.

The family maintains that this is not just a case of physical assault but one of alleged discrimination against an innocent student based on his caste. The complaint mentions that other students present at the time, Rohit Jatav and Teevash Jatav, also witnessed the entire incident. It is believed that the police may record the statements of these students during the investigation to corroborate all aspects of the incident.

Given the seriousness of the matter, the Kolaras police registered the complaint and filed an FIR against the accused teacher, Lokesh Sharma, under sections 296(A), 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and sections 3(1)(d), 3(1)(dh), and 3(2)(va) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Police stated that the investigation is ongoing and further legal action will be taken based on the facts that emerge.

Speaking to The Mooknayak, sociologist Dr. Imtihan Khan said, "It has been 79 years since the country gained independence, and the Constitution guarantees all citizens the right to equality, dignity, and a life free from discrimination. Despite this, if a child is allegedly subjected to humiliating treatment based on his caste, it is a matter of grave concern. A school should be a place where children are taught equality, sensitivity, and humanity, not where they experience discrimination."

He added, "If such allegations against a teacher are proven true in the investigation, it is not only a violation of the law but also a cause for introspection for both the education system and society. Caste-based discrimination has the most negative impact on children's psychology, self-esteem, and education. Therefore, in such cases, there is a need for impartial investigation, strict action against the guilty, and regular sensitivity training for teachers regarding constitutional values and social equality."
