Indore— In a shocking incident in Indore, a group of Dalits working in their leased fields were brutally attacked by members of the dominant caste, leaving one person dead and nine injured. The attack took place in Mundlakalma village of Indore district, and the victims were members of the family of Mayaram Singh, who had reached their field to harvest their crops.
According to an FIR filed at the Gautampura police station, Babu Rajput, Tufan, Pawan, Nagu, and Jitendra came and started abusing the family members. When Mayaram asked them to stop, he was attacked by Tufan, and then other members of the Dalit community were also attacked by iron bars wielded by members of the dominant castes. Later, 40-50 more people joined in to beat them.
The injured were rushed to the government hospital nearby, and from there, they were all taken to MYH Hospital. Unfortunately, Mayaram succumbed to his injuries on 17th March 2023. The land dispute in Kankwa village dates back to 1961, and the family of Mayaram had been awarded the lease in 2002. The court had also given a decision in favor of the lease-holders. Mayaram had been given the possession of land by the administration after a court order, and his family members were harvesting the agricultural fields when they were attacked.
The Gautam Pura Station Incharge confirmed that two of the accused, Babu and Pawan, have been arrested, and efforts are being made to nab the other accused. The police are also exploring the option of demolishing the homes of the accused at large.
