Mumbai- As a result of a significant breakthrough made by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the first consignment of Indian pomegranates has now reached Melbourne, Australia.

The consignment was well-received and showcased at Fine Food Australia 2024, highlighting the global demand for Indian pomegranates. After Australia granted market access in 2020, a work plan and export procedures were finalized in February 2024, streamlining the process.

India, the world's second-largest producer of horticultural crops, primarily grows pomegranates in states like Maharashtra and Gujarat. APEDA has set up forums to boost exports and address supply chain issues, ensuring collaboration among government bodies and exporters.

In the previous financial year, India exported over 72,000 metric tons of pomegranates to various countries, generating $69 million. APEDA's efforts to promote exports, especially of perishable items, continue to support Indian farmers by creating sustainable opportunities in global markets.

The consignment, sent by Kay Bee Exports, weighed 1.1 metric tons and met strict quality standards. It was packed in a facility in Ahmednagar and treated in Navi Mumbai before shipment. APEDA, under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, remains committed to promoting Indian agro-products worldwide through various initiatives and collaborations.
