Fertilizer Shortage Sparks Protests in Madhya Pradesh

Farmers block highways, allege lack of supplies at distribution centers

The Mooknayak English

Bhopal - Farmers across Madhya Pradesh are protesting severe shortages of fertilizers during the crucial wheat and rabi crop planting season. Farmers in Madhya Pradesh have been protesting fertilizer shortages for several days, with recent demonstrations reported in three districts.

Farmers are alleging a lack of fertilizers at government-run distribution centers, despite state assurances of adequate supply. In Niwari district, a large group of farmers blocked a highway on Monday evening, demanding action from the authorities. Police intervened to disperse the crowd.

The situation reached a tragic point in Guna district, where a farmer died by suicide and recorded a video detailing his struggles due to the fertilizer shortage. The incident sparked outrage and demands for accountability from both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress parties. The Congress party has been particularly vocal, accusing the state administration of inaction.

State Agriculture Minister Endal Singh Kansana has attributed the shortage to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
