Dr. Girija Vyas began her legislative career in 1985, winning the Udaipur City Assembly seat in Rajasthan, defeating the formidable Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gulab Chand Kataria. This victory marked her debut as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from 1985 to 1990, during which she also served as Rajasthan’s Tourism Minister.

Dr. Vyas had a distinguished parliamentary career, serving as a Member of Parliament (MP) four times. She represented Udaipur in the Lok Sabha in 1991, 1996, and 1999, and later Chittorgarh in 2009. Her parliamentary tenure was characterized by her articulate interventions and advocacy for social justice, urban development, and women’s rights. As a close confidante of the Gandhi family—Indira, Rajiv, Sonia, and Rahul—she wielded significant influence within the Congress party.

During her time as an MP, she held key portfolios in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) governments. Notably, she served as the Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, where she championed initiatives like the Rajiv Awas Yojana to make India slum-free. The demise of Dr. Girija Vyas prompted an outpouring of grief from political leaders, particularly within the Congress party, as well as across party lines.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in his x post wrote, " The news of the demise of former Union Minister, former Rajasthan Congress President, and senior Congress leader Dr. Girija Vyas ji is profoundly saddening.

As a true Gandhian, she fulfilled her duties while setting an inspiring example of women’s empowerment.
