Noida- In a powerful display of resilience by women workers, hundreds of domestic helps, mostly women employed as maids and house cleaners in upscale residential societies, took to the streets in Noida’s Sector 121 on Tuesday. The protest centered outside Cleo County society, where the women gheraoed the premises, raised slogans for higher salaries, and, in moments of heightened tension, shattered the glass door of one building.

This women-centric agitation forms part of the broader wage hike movement that has gripped Noida, highlighting the daily struggles of female domestic workers amid rising living costs.

The protest marked the second day of unrest in the region. On Monday, factory workers had demonstrated violently in Phase-2 areas, but Tuesday saw a significant shift as domestic women workers joined the fray, bringing the movement directly into residential neighborhoods.

Coinciding symbolically with Ambedkar Jayanti, the protest by these women maids and house helps erupted at the upscale Cleo County society in Sector 121, where they gheraoed the premises, raised slogans for fair wages, and in moments of intense frustration, shattered the glass door of one building.

Voices of the Women: “We Work Hard, But Our Pay Doesn’t Keep Up”

The protesting women, dressed in colorful sarees and salwar suits, gathered in large numbers outside Cleo County and nearby areas like Garhi Chaukhandi. Many shared stories of long working hours, heavy workloads, lack of weekly offs, and salaries that fail to cover escalating expenses.

One woman domestic worker said, “Gas cylinder prices are rising, rent is increasing every year, but our monthly pay stays the same. How do we feed our families and educate our children?” Another added, “We clean homes, cook, and care for children and elders from morning till evening, yet we are often denied proper leave or respect.”

Their core demands include:

A minimum monthly wage of ₹18,000 to ₹20,000

Fixed working hours with adequate rest and weekly offs

Annual increments linked to inflation

Better working conditions and dignity at the workplace

These women emphasized that their protest is not about greed but about survival and basic rights in a fast-growing city like Noida, where living costs have skyrocketed.

What Exactly Happened at Cleo County?

According to multiple reports, the women domestic workers assembled peacefully initially but the situation turned tense as they encircled the society entrance. Videos circulating on social media show the crowd raising slogans and, in one instance, the glass entrance door of a building being damaged. Some also mentioned stone-pelting outside the society premises.

Police personnel reached the spot promptly. While there were reports of a police team facing resistance and one vehicle being targeted, authorities managed to disperse the crowd and restore order. No major injuries were widely reported from the Cleo County site, though the overall Noida protests saw some clashes.

Noida Police conducted flag marches in Sector 121 and surrounding areas as a precautionary measure. Heavy deployment continues to maintain peace, and traffic has been normalized in most parts.

The women’s protest has drawn widespread attention and support from opposition leaders.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi strongly backed the workers’ movement, stating, “This isn’t greed, it’s their right.” He highlighted the rising cost of living and questioned the gap between “Developed India” rhetoric and the ground reality faced by ordinary workers, especially women supporting their households.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also expressed solidarity with the protesting women and factory workers, criticizing the government for policies that burden the working class while favoring industrialists.

Several women’s rights activists and local labor organizations have stood with the domestic helps, describing their struggle as a fight for gender justice in informal employment, where women form the majority but often lack legal protections and bargaining power.

Situation at Cleo County and Sector 121 is now under control with heavy police presence. No fresh violence reported in the last few hours. Residential societies are issuing advisories to residents and restricting entries inside the buildings.

Police have appealed for calm and warned against spreading rumors. Protests in industrial areas continue in a more contained manner, with sit-ins ongoing in some spots.

This women-led protest in Noida has spotlighted the often invisible labor of domestic helps- the women who keep urban households running but frequently face low pay, long hours, and lack of social security. Their voices are now echoing beyond Sector 121, raising larger questions about fair wages, women’s economic empowerment, and labor rights in India’s rapidly urbanizing landscape.

Authorities, residents, and labor groups are engaged in talks to find a sustainable resolution that respects the dignity and contributions of these essential women workers.
