UPSSSC Violates Reservation Norms Sparking Outrage: Netizens Demand Action

Uttar Pradesh— Netizens cry foul after UPSSSC flouts reservation norms. In what can be said to be riding roughshod over the norms, UPSSSC (Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission) violated reservation norms as less than 10% of the total vacancies were reserved for Other Backward Classes against the mandated 27.5%.

In a notification released by the UPSSSC for the post of VDO (Village Development Officer), the commission has advertised a total of 1468 vacancies. However, the breakup of the vacancies reveals a sheer divergence from the mandated reservation norms.

Out of the total 1468 vacancies, 849 have been marked as unreserved, which goes against the logical norm of having more than 50% of the vacancies classified as unreserved to provide space for the reservation of SC/ST/OBC, which is 21%, 2%, and 27% respectively in Uttar Pradesh.

356 vacancies have been marked for Scheduled Castes, which is almost in adherence to the 21% reservation that the category gets in the state, but the Other Backward Classes have been allotted 139 seats, which is around 9.75% of the total seats and is a gross violation of reservation rules prevalent in the state.

Twitter Storm to save reservations, politicians join in

"OBC Arakshan Bachao" trended top on Twitter on Friday against the gross discrepancies being done with OBC reservation in the recruitment as a whole and in UPSSSC VDO in particular.

Joining the Twitter trend, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh called for a movement against the BJP government. He said in the tweet, "There should be a campaign against the violation of rights of OBC by the BJP government. The anti-reservationist thinking of BJP has always come as a roadblock against Social Justice."

Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya used the notification of the UPSSSC to say that "Ramrajya is a fraud. Earlier also in the name of Ramrajya Shambhuka was decapitated, and Eklavya lost his thumb, and now the reservation of Dalits, OBCs, and STs is being cut."
