Bhopal- A sensational incident came to light on Tuesday in the premises of the Jabalpur High Court in Madhya Pradesh, where Adivasi lawyer Roop Singh Marawi was allegedly brutally attacked by some lawyers. The allegation is that this assault was carried out by Gwalior lawyer Anil Mishra and his associates. After the incident, when the victim went to the Civil Lines police station to file an FIR, the police refused to register the report. Hurt by the denial of justice, lawyer Marawi has sat on a dharna.

According to victim lawyer Roop Singh Marawi, the incident occurred between around 2 to 2:30 PM. He was present in the Jabalpur High Court premises for his work. During this time, lawyers from Gwalior, including Anil Mishra and some of his companions, arrived there and began abusing him over some dispute. In the blink of an eye, the verbal altercation turned physical, and they attacked him with kicks and punches.

Marawi says the assault was so sudden and violent that he didn't even get a chance to react. People nearby somehow intervened to calm the situation. After the incident, he is deeply hurt both mentally and physically.

After the incident, lawyer Marawi went to the Civil Lines police station in Jabalpur with his companions and tried to file a complaint. He alleges that the police outright refused to register his report. The victim's deep wound was exacerbated by the police's evasion and indifferent attitude.

Marawi says, "When a lawyer is not safe in the High Court premises and even after going to the police station, justice is not served, one can imagine the plight of the common man."

Seeing no FIR registered and no action taken, lawyer Roop Singh Marawi chose the path of protest. He began sitting on a dharna in the High Court premises itself from around 4 PM in the evening. Several lawyers and members of social organizations started arriving in support.

During the dharna, while raising slogans, the lawyers stated that this is not just an attack on one person, but an assault on the honor of the entire Adivasi, SC, ST, and OBC communities. They described it as a direct blow to the Constitution and the rule of law.

The incident has also sparked sharp reactions on social media. Many people have tagged Madhya Pradesh's DGP, Chief Minister, and state government, demanding immediate intervention in the matter. People say that if strict and prompt action is not taken on such incidents, it will erode public trust in law and order and the justice system. Organizations in support say that discrimination and injustice often happen with Adivasis and marginalized communities. When the same discrimination starts appearing in the premises called the temple of justice, it is an extremely worrying situation.

In a conversation with The Mooknayak, Sunil Aastey, leader of Azad Samaj Party, Madhya Pradesh, said, "The attack on Adivasi lawyer Roop Singh Marawi in the Jabalpur High Court premises is highly condemnable and shameful. This is not just an attack on one person, but a direct assault on the honor and constitutional rights of Adivasi, SC, ST, and OBC communities.

The most heartbreaking part is that when the victim went to the police station to file an FIR, the police refused to register the report. This raises serious questions about the rule of law. If lawyers are not safe in the High Court premises and justice is not served even after going to the police station, how will ordinary citizens remain secure?

We demand that strict action be taken immediately against the accused, the FIR be registered, and arrests be made, and the victim be guaranteed justice and security. Our struggle will continue until justice is served."

Congress Condemns the Government

In a conversation with The Mooknayak , Ramu Tekam, State President of Adivasi Congress, said, "The BJP government is providing protection to people like Anil Mishra, who insult Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and question the Constitution. It is extremely unfortunate that such people receive patronage from those in power, and we strongly condemn this.

We demand a fair investigation into the attack on the Adivasi lawyer and strict action against the guilty. If the police-administration does not show seriousness in the matter and fails to take action, Adivasi Congress will launch a statewide movement. This fight is not just for one person, but for the honor of the Constitution and Adivasi society."

Advocate Neeraj Bariwa, State President of Adivasi Vikas Parishad (Student Wing), told The Mooknayak, "Injustices against marginalized castes are continuously happening across the state, but the government remains silent despite seeing everything. This silence itself is a grave crime. When people go to police stations and courts for justice and still do not get it, it raises serious questions about the system.

Our clear demand is that an impartial investigation be conducted immediately in this case and strict action be taken against the culprits. If the government and administration still do not show seriousness, the marginalized society will be forced to take to the streets for their rights."

Demand for Action Against the Accused

Protestors say that the dharna will continue until the following demands are met.

  • An FIR should be immediately registered on lawyer Roop Singh Marawi's complaint.

  • Accused lawyer Anil Mishra and his associates should be arrested immediately.

  • Security arrangements in the High Court premises should be further tightened.

  • The victim should be guaranteed security and justice.

.

During the dharna, lawyers repeatedly emphasized that this incident is not just a case of assault on one individual. It is a question tied to the self-respect, equality, and constitutional rights of Adivasi, SC, ST, and OBC communities. If such cases are suppressed, it will send the wrong message to society.
