Vice President Condemns "Symptomatic Malaise" Remarks on Violence Against Women

New Delhi- Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his strong disapproval of recent remarks that downplayed violence against women as a "symptomatic malaise." Speaking at Bharati College, University of Delhi, on the theme "Role of Women in Viksit Bharat," Dhankhar criticized the statements made by a prominent figure in the Supreme Court Bar and a Member of Parliament, who suggested that such incidents are commonplace.

Dhankhar said, "I am shocked, hurt, and somewhat surprised that someone in such a high position would trivialize these heinous acts by calling them a 'symptomatic malaise.' Such a stance is shameful and does great injustice to the dignity of the office held."

Expressing his pain over these comments, Dhankhar emphasized that such statements not only diminish the suffering of women but also serve partisan or self-interests. He urged the nation to take a firm stand against such attitudes, calling it a grave injustice to humanity. "We must not trivialize the suffering of our girls. This cannot continue," he added.

The Vice-President echoed the recent sentiments of President Droupadi Murmu, stating, "The President has made it clear: enough is enough. This call must resonate across the nation. We must create a system where there is zero tolerance for making a girl or woman a victim. Such actions are an injury to our civilization and an extreme form of barbarity."

Dhankhar also highlighted the ongoing fear that women and girls face in society, calling it a national concern. He remarked, "A society where women and girls do not feel safe is not a civilized society. Such a situation tarnishes democracy and hinders our progress."

Furthermore, Dhankhar underscored the importance of financial independence for women and girls, urging them to empower themselves to unleash their full potential. He said, "Financial independence is essential for you to realize your energy and talent."

He concluded by emphasizing the critical role of women in the nation's development, particularly in the rural, agricultural, and informal sectors. Dhankhar asserted, "India cannot become a developed nation if half of its population is not actively participating in its growth. We must create an environment that enables the full participation of our girls and women."

The Vice-President's remarks come at a time when the safety and empowerment of women are under intense national scrutiny, and his call for action reflects the urgency of addressing these critical issues.
