Bhopal- In a shocking case from Bhopal, a woman has filed an FIR against her live-in partner for allegedly sexually exploiting her for three years under the false promise of marriage. The accused, Suraj Inwati, reportedly used caste discrimination as an excuse to refuse marriage after years of a physical relationship. Police have arrested Suraj on charges of rape based on the victim's complaint.

The victim, originally from Betul and working a private job in Bhopal, met Suraj through a friend five years ago. Their friendship gradually turned into a romantic relationship, and in 2021, Suraj introduced her to his family, assuring her of marriage. Trusting his words, the couple began living together in a rented house. However, over time, Suraj's behavior changed. Despite maintaining physical relations, he repeatedly delayed marriage.

On June 27, 2025, after yet another intimate encounter, the woman pressured Suraj for marriage, only for him to bluntly refuse, citing caste differences. He allegedly told her, "You don’t belong to my community, so I won’t marry you. I’ll marry a girl from my caste as per my mother’s wishes." He even suggested she could continue living with him until he married someone else. Heartbroken and betrayed, the woman approached Misrod police station, leading to Suraj’s arrest under relevant sections of the law.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports a steady increase in crimes against women and minors in Madhya Pradesh. In 2022, India recorded 4,45,256 cases of crimes against women (a 4% rise from 2021) and 1,62,449 cases against children (an 8.7% increase). Bhopal alone saw 758 cases of crimes against minors in 2022, reflecting a worrying trend. Investigations in the current case are ongoing.
