Kolkata Junior Doctors End Hunger Strike

Kolkata- Junior doctors in Kolkata ended their hunger strike on Monday after a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who assured them of addressing their concerns regarding the recent rape and murder of a fellow doctor. The strike, which lasted an indefinite period, had garnered national attention and support from doctors across India.

Seventeen junior doctors participated in the meeting at the state secretariat, Nabanna, which was livestreamed publicly. Following the meeting, junior doctor Sayantani Ghosh Hazra told ANI, "Today, at the meeting with the Chief Minister, we had the opportunity to discuss many issues, and she also shared various points with us. We have been assured of some directives, which she said we would receive by 3 p.m. tomorrow."

The junior doctors' protest began after the body of a trainee doctor was found at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The incident triggered a political row between the BJP and the state government, with the BJP demanding Banerjee's resignation.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) expressed solidarity with the protesting doctors by announcing a nationwide fast on October 15 in support of the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front.

Following the end of the hunger strike, the junior doctors were taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, as many had experienced health complications during the protest.
