Raipur - A horrific incident in Chhattisgarh’s capital, Raipur, has left the state reeling after a 13-year-old boy allegedly raped a 3-year-old girl in the Civil Lines (Pandari) area. The victim, found in critical condition, remains in intensive care, prompting the opposition Congress party to form a seven-member all-women investigative panel to probe the case thoroughly.

The assault occurred when the toddler, who had been sleeping beside her mother, stepped outside her home. She was later discovered crying, with visible signs of distress and stained clothing, by her mother and neighbors. The family rushed her to a hospital, where doctors confirmed the sexual assault and reported her condition as precarious. The accused, a neighbor and acquaintance from the same community, was apprehended and is in police custody.

In response, State Congress President Deepak Baij swiftly constituted a committee of women leaders to investigate the incident. The panel, led by former Rajya Sabha member Chhaya Verma as coordinating member, includes Anita Sharma (former Dharsiwa legislator), Deepti Dubey (ex-Mayor of Raipur), Sangita Dubey (State Congress Unit Secretary), Vandana Rajput (State Congress Spokesperson), Pragati Vajpayee (State Congress Unit General Secretary), and Mamata Rai (President of Women Congress Unit, Urban). Baij has instructed the committee to engage with the victim’s family and neighbors, compile a detailed report, and submit findings promptly.

This chilling case follows another recent tragedy in Chhattisgarh during Navratri, where a 6-year-old girl was allegedly raped, electrocuted, and murdered by her uncle, with her body dumped in a neighbor’s car to deflect suspicion.

That incident triggered statewide protests, with the victim’s parents questioning the police’s account. The recurrence of such crimes has heightened alarm, with National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data highlighting Chhattisgarh’s persistent issue of sexual violence against minors, often by relatives or acquaintances. Raipur and other districts remain particularly unsafe for young girls, intensifying calls for stronger action.
