News Impact: Students permitted to appear for the examinations, scholarship woes remain

Lucknow— Baba Saheb Ambedkar University, Lucknow has finally relented and the permitted students to appear in the semester examination. The default examination would be held again so that all those students who missed it at the first place would have a chance to clear the papers.

In December the institution had debarred few students from the examination owing to non remittance of fees. However, the students protested the management's decision claiming that the delay by the social welfare department in disbursing the scholarships had been the cause of nonsubmission of fees.

Some of the students staged a sit-in dharna outside the administrative block of the university asserting their demands while braving the chilly night weather. The Mooknayak was the first to raise the issue.

Subsequently, the administrations relented and allowed the students to appear in the examination. Meanwhile, the social welfare officer Sunita Singh also met the students and assured a speedy disbursal of the scholarships, following which the students withdrew their protest.

Praveen Kumar, one of the protestors said “Although we have been allowed to appear for the examination and are giving the practicals, the discriminatory attitude of the administration remains unchanged. Yesterday they released mark sheets of the previous semester".

He also alleged that the SC/ST cell of the university is at fault as it has come to their notice that they have submitted only Rs 15,300 against the total 1,15,300 required for the fees. He said the students would wait for the disbursal of the scholarship for some time. Once the papers are over, a movement would be launched against the university administration at a mass level.

When The Mooknayak contacted the social welfare officer Sunita Sing , she said that the university had written a letter to the department regarding the pending disbursal of scholarship which has been duly forwarded to the state government. The funds released were insufficient to cover the expenses of the fees last year, and now it is up to the UP administration to decide the matter.
