E-rickshaw driver beaten to death for defying donation demand in Bihar

Despite the scourge of spiraling prices, the existence of individuals from marginalized groups such as Dalits and Muslims continues to deteriorate in value. However, Rajbir, a 26-year-old e-rickshaw operator and member of the Mahadalit community from Nawada in Bihar, could not have foreseen that his refusal to contribute a sum of Rs 1000 for the Saraswati Puja would ultimately lead to his untimely demise.

Double grief for the family

According to Vinay, the bereaved brother of the deceased, "We were en route home after fulfilling the pind-daan ritual for our recently deceased mother, with Rajbir transporting us on his e-rickshaw. Upon arriving at the village of Vijaypur, we were accosted by a group who insisted upon a donation of Rs 1000 for the Saraswati Puja. We explained that we were unable to comply, as our family was still reeling from the loss of our mother and the accompanying emotional turmoil.

Hurled abuses before attacking

Vinay recounts that when Rajbir, also known as Ravindra, proffered a mere Rs 20 in lieu of the demanded Rs 1000, the assailants launched a torrent of verbal abuse and, upon his protest, proceeded to inflict a savage beating upon him. The attackers numbered around 12 to 15 individuals. Vinay laments that despite being rushed to the hospital, Rajbir was declared dead upon arrival, having sustained fatal internal injuries.

Accused at large

Amrish Rahul, the Superintendent of Police of Nawada, said, " The homicide occurred in Vijaypur Village under the jurisdiction of the Sirdaul police station. Upon receiving notification, law enforcement officials promptly arrived on the scene. One individual has been arrested and an investigation is underway."

The Station Officer at Sirdaul, Saroj Kumar told The Mooknayak, "We have lodged a complaint under charges of murder and apprehended one suspect. A manhunt is currently underway for the remaining suspects."
