USA took the lead in celebrations of the Ambedkar Jayanti . In New York An “Equality March” comprising of Ambedkarites NRI moved from Madison Avenue. The procession was led by Dilip Mhaske and journalist Dilip C Mandal participated in the march.
The participants of this procession chanted Jai Bhim. At the United Nation discussions were held over the topic “Artificial Intelligence for Social Justice: Overcoming Barriers and Unleashing Opportunities for All.”
Before that, In Harvard University a talk was held in which Meena Kotwal, the founder of The Mooknayak addressed the gathering. She said that 100 years ago Ambedkar had said that the media won’t raise our issue and had started his own newspaper- Mooknayak but even today we see that the Mainstream Media, also called Manu Media is not raising our issue and therefore we have started The Mooknayak, which is named after the first publication of Baba Saheb Ambedkar and is a platform for raising the issues for the marginalised.
She cited the Oxfam research of 2019 to highlight the fact that there is no Dalit and Adivasi in the decision-making position in Mainstream Media.
London was the venue of many events related to the Ambedkar Jayanti. Sushant Singh, President of Student welfare of SOAS School of Oriental and Asian Studies informed The Mooknayak that the celebration which will extend to the end of the month started with Jyotiba Phule Jayanti on 11th. SOAS campus held a meeting on the occasion. While a function was held at Ambedkar Centre located at the Indian-dominated Suburb ‘South hall’ in West hall. The event was organised by FABO ( Federation of Ambedkar and Buddhist Organisation), an organisation at the forefront of anti- caste movement in the UK for more than 50 years.
While on the 14th April the Indian High Commission in London hosted a programme to honour Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar. Babasaheb Ambedkar lived in the UK while pursuing Phd at LSE.
Australia also joined the celebration with an event at the Adelaide and University of Melbourne. The university of Melbourne had speakers from all over the Australia. The Key speakers were Hari Priya Rangan, Rakesh Mehmi, Ajay Kataria, Prashant Rale and Shilpa Sonawane, while Anshul Moon regaled the audience with his cultural performance. The event was organised by Australia International Mission.
Meanwhile a Zoom-a-thon was also organised with Australia as the base in which participants from 40 countries participated online. The zoom-a-thon is the first of a kind event. Prof Jenik Radon, Raj Dorle and and Prof Sayeda bano Speakers from Newzealand kick started the event and those from Canada concluded the event.
