Karnataka Mulls Hijab Decision Amidst Intense Debate

Government discusses allowing female students to wear hijab for exams

Bengaluru- The Karnataka Congress government is taking a measured approach regarding the potential allowance of hijab-wearing students to write exams. Home Minister G. Parameshwara stated on February 4, that the matter requires detailed discussion before making a decision, while Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa indicated that actions would be taken based on the Home Department's directions.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's earlier announcement about lifting the hijab ban in educational institutions has reignited debate on the issue, with the opposition BJP threatening to protest if such a decision is implemented. Siddaramaiah defended his stance by emphasizing personal choice in clothing and food habits, stating that these are individual rights that shouldn't be politicized.

The controversy dates back to the previous BJP government's ban on hijab in schools and pre-university colleges, which was upheld by the Karnataka High Court but received a split verdict in the Supreme Court. The case, which garnered international attention and criticism, is currently awaiting review by a larger bench of the Supreme Court.

The issue had previously led to widespread protests and communal tensions across the state, including a notable incident in Mandya district that drew attention from international figures.
