Kolkata- West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose expressed deep concern over the rising crimes against women in the state, calling it a "sad fact" during a Jay Jawan Day celebration with military veterans on Monday.
Bose stressed the need for society to unite and combat these atrocities effectively. "It is a sad fact of contemporary Bengal that atrocities are heaped upon women. This is something that the entire society has to resist forcefully and effectively, and we will do it," he stated.
The Governor's remarks come amidst heightened public scrutiny and demands for justice in the recent RG Kar rape and murder case. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari pledged his party's support to the victim's family during a visit earlier this month. "The whole of the BJP and I stand with this family," Adhikari said, assuring them of ongoing efforts to seek justice and hold those responsible accountable, including those accused of evidence tampering.
Junior doctors have previously called for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the case, demanding stringent action and capital punishment for the perpetrators. Adding to the chorus of criticism, senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of fostering an environment of fear and tension in the lead-up to the Medinipur by-elections.
