Enhanced Security Measures for SCO Summit in Islamabad

Islamabad: S. Jaishankar arrived Tuesday for the 23rd Council of Heads of Government meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

Jaishankar was greeted at Nur Khan Airbase by Ilyas Mehmood Nizami, Director General for South Asia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The reception accorded to the visiting dignitary highlighted the significance of the event, with children in traditional attire presenting bouquets and a red carpet rolled out for their arrival.

SCO CHG will convene for two days, with Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as chair. Pakistan chairs the CHG in 2023-24, having assumed the role on October 26, 2023, in Bishkek.

The summit, officially commencing on Wednesday in Islamabad, will focus on the organization's trade and economic agenda under heightened security measures. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that discussions will primarily focus on the trade and economic agenda of the organization.

Jaishankar's participation underscores India's active engagement with the SCO framework. The MEA emphasized India's commitment to various mechanisms and initiatives within the SCO.
