Haridwar- A horrifying crime in Ranipur in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, has left the nation in shock—a mother allegedly conspired in the gangrape of her own 13-year-old daughter. The accused, Anamika Sharma, a former BJP women’s wing leader, was arrested along with her lover, Sumit Patwal, while police hunt for a third suspect. The case, stemming from a bitter marital dispute, has shattered trust and exposed unimaginable cruelty. How could a mother become an accomplice in such a heinous act? The Haridwar police are now racing to deliver justice as the victim fights to recover from her trauma.

According to reports, Anamika Sharma had been estranged from her husband due to ongoing disputes and was living separately. Her 13-year-old daughter had been staying with her father for the past month. Noticing his daughter’s withdrawn and distressed behavior, the father spoke to her, and she revealed the horrific ordeal of sexual abuse orchestrated by her mother and her mother’s lover, Sumit.

The father immediately lodged a complaint at the Ranipur police station, prompting swift police action. Police Action and Statement Haridwar’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Pramendra Singh Dobhal, took the case with utmost seriousness and ordered immediate action. Under the supervision of Ranipur Station House Officer (SHO) Kamal Mohan Singh Bhandari, the police initiated an investigation. A medical examination of the victim confirmed the sexual assault. On Wednesday, June 4, the police arrested Anamika Sharma and Sumit Patwal, a resident of New Canal Colony, Bahadrabad, from Yug Residency Hotel near Shivmurti Chowk, a property leased by Sumit.

SSP Pramendra Singh Dobhal addressed the press, stating, “Based on the complaint filed by the victim and her father, a case has been registered at Ranipur police station under Sections 70(2), 351(3), 3(5) BNS, and Sections 3(a)/4(2), 5(l)/6, 16/17 of the POCSO Act. Preliminary investigations have confirmed the allegations. The medical report substantiated the sexual assault. The two accused, Anamika Sharma and Sumit Patwal, have been arrested and presented in court, which remanded them to 14 days of judicial custody. Another accused, Shubham, is absconding, and police teams are conducting raids to apprehend him.”

According to the police, the victim revealed in her statement that in January 2025, her mother, along with Sumit Patwal and his friend Shubham, took her to BHEL Stadium under the pretext of an outing. There, under the influence of alcohol and with her mother’s consent, the two men gangraped her. The abuse continued at various locations, including hotels in Haridwar, Agra, and Vrindavan. The victim was threatened with death to her and her father if she disclosed the abuse. SHO Kamal Mohan Singh Bhandari added, “The victim is undergoing medical examination and counseling. Given her mental state, we are involving specialists to support her. Police teams are actively working to identify and arrest the remaining suspect.”

Following the incident’s exposure, Haridwar BJP District President Ashutosh Sharma confirmed that Anamika was removed from her position in the women’s wing in August 2024 due to prior complaints. The party has now completely disassociated itself from her.

This case is not only a grave legal offense but also a profound betrayal of familial trust, leaving society in shock. The involvement of a mother in such a crime against her own daughter raises serious questions about moral and ethical boundaries. The police have initiated counseling for the victim to help her cope with the trauma, and the investigation continues to ensure all perpetrators face justice.
