Bhopal - Bhopal is set to become home to the country’s first state-of-the-art Unani Hammam (Greek bath therapy center), offering a drug-free, natural treatment approach rooted in ancient Unani medicine. This advanced facility will provide patients with an alternative therapy option, attracting visitors from across India to experience its healing benefits.
Located on the Kaliyasot hills within the campus of Hakim Syed Ziaul Hasan Government Unani Medical College, the project is backed by extensive research and a detailed plan. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth approximately ₹3 crores has been submitted to the AYUSH Department and will soon be presented to the finance committee for approval. The design draws inspiration from Nawabi-era hammams, reimagined with modern scientific and technological advancements.
Derived from the Arabic word for "heated bath," Hammam therapy has been a cornerstone of Unani medicine for centuries. It effectively treats conditions like obesity, diabetes, joint pain, and skin disorders through controlled heat exposure. The therapy enhances blood circulation, relaxes muscles, and promotes natural healing.
Bhopal’s hammam will feature three specialized chambers with precise temperature settings: 36.5°C (mild warmth), 42-45°C (therapeutic heat) and 50°C (intense detoxification)
Patients will rotate between these chambers for 10-15 minutes each, allowing deep heat penetration for physical and mental rejuvenation.
The facility will be equipped with: Automated temperature control, Steam generation units, Therapeutic bathing systems and Medical supervision for safety.
State officials believe this initiative will strengthen Unani medicine’s scientific credibility while positioning Madhya Pradesh as a pioneer in government-backed traditional wellness tourism.
Madhya Pradesh is set to become the first state in India to establish a government-run Unani Hammam, serving as a model for other states. Dr. Mahfooz Ur Rahman, a senior faculty member at the Unani Medical College, highlights: "Hammams were once a cultural and therapeutic hallmark during the Nawabi era. By blending tradition with modern science, we’re reviving this practice—not just as treatment but as a national wellness destination."
With its launch, Bhopal could redefine wellness tourism in India, making Unani therapy more accessible and globally recognized.
