Pollution: SC Urges Delhi, Surrounding States to Suspend Physical Classes

Hazardous air quality prompts action to protect public health

New Delhi- The Supreme Court today urged the governments of Delhi and surrounding states to consider immediately suspending physical classes up to Class 12 in response to the severe air quality crisis. The court's directive comes as Delhi's air quality index (AQI) reached a hazardous level of 481 at 7 a.m. on Monday, prompting widespread health concerns.

A bench headed by Justice Abhay S. Oka and comprising Justice A.G. Masih emphasized the urgent need to implement all measures outlined under GRAP-IV (Graded Response Action Plan) to combat the escalating pollution levels. The bench has scheduled a follow-up hearing for Friday and expects the state governments to take all possible actions to improve the AQI.

This decision follows the implementation of GRAP-IV on Sunday, which includes the closure of physical classes for Classes 6-9 and 11. The Delhi government has already issued an order to this effect.

The hazardous air quality, classified as 'severe-plus,' has severe health implications, particularly for vulnerable populations. The situation is further compounded by dense fog, which has reduced visibility and disrupted flight operations.
