New Delhi- The student-led protest at Jantar Mantar demanding accountability over alleged examination irregularities and the NEET-UG paper leak has entered its seventh day, with the movement gaining new momentum following a plea from a student and a major announcement from activist Sonam Wangchuk.
The demonstration, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), began on June 20 and has seen a growing number of students, young professionals, social media influencers and even coaching gurus gather at the site to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and justice for students who have died by suicide amidst the crisis .
The human impact of the crisis was highlighted today by a letter shared by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke from a student named Aliya. In her message, Aliya expressed gratitude to Dipke and the protesters for their efforts but made a specific request.
"Bhaiya, I have one request please make an announcement so that parents do not stop their Children from joining this protest."
Dipke shared the letter publicly, adding his own appeal to parents. "I request all parents: please don’t stop your children from joining the protest. This is about their future," he said, echoing the student's plea for familial support in the ongoing agitation.
Since June 20, the protest site has been a hub of activity and symbolic demonstrations:
'Diaper A Day Keeps Leaks Away': On June 23, the protest entered its fourth day with the CJP announcing a "diaper donation drive." Supporters were urged to bring diapers with the demand for the education minister's resignation written on them .
Candlelight Vigil: To honor the memory of students who have died by suicide due to the paper leak controversy, protesters have lit candles at the venue .
Postcard Campaign: The protest called for a completed postcard drive on June 25 demanding Dharmendra Pradhan to resign.
The protest is set to intensify further, as education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk has announced that he will begin an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar from June 28 if the government fails to meet his demands .
In a video message posted on X, Wangchuk stated he is giving the government a deadline of June 27 to address at least one of his two key demands: holding the government accountable for the NEET paper leak and addressing environmental and cultural concerns for his native Ladakh .
"If I do not receive a response on either of these issues by Saturday, I will sit on a hunger strike with all of you," Wangchuk said .
The protests were triggered by the cancellation of the NEET-UG exam following allegations of a paper leak. With the re-examination scheduled for June 21, the pressure on students has been immense . CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke recently wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that 11 students have died by suicide in recent weeks and demanding a compensation of Rs 1 crore for each affected family .
The core demand remains the removal of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, with protesters vowing to continue their sit-in until accountability is ensured .
