Haryana IPS Suicide Case: Family Rejects DSP Offer for Deceased Officer's Daughter, Demands DGP's Removal

Protests Intensify as Wife IAS Officer Amneet P. Kumar Insists on DGP Shatrujeet Kapur's Arrest Before Last Rites

New Delhi: The suspicious suicide of Haryana cadre's Dalit IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar is gaining political and social momentum. Six days after the incident, the government has failed to convince the family to allow a postmortem. The reason is clear: the family and community members have a single demand, the last rites will not be performed until DGP Shatrujeet Kapur is removed from his post and arrested.

Meanwhile, according to sources, the government, in an attempt to pacify the family, offered the deceased IPS officer's elder daughter a DSP position. However, the family rejected the offer outright. The relatives stated that their fight is not for a post, but for justice. No official statement has been released by the government regarding this matter yet.

The deceased officer's wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, has made it clear that she will not perform her husband's last rites until DGP Shatrujeet Kapur is removed and arrested. While the government has transferred the IPS officer named in the case, Narendra Bijarnia, from the SP Rohtak position, the family is adamant about his arrest.

Mahapanchayat in Chandigarh, Khap Panchayats Enter the Fray

In response to the incident, organizations from the SC community and the family have called for a Mahapanchayat in Chandigarh today at 2 PM. On the other hand, some Khap Panchayats have also come out in support of IPS Narendra Bijarnia. They are preparing to hold a large panchayat in his favor. This has put the state government in a difficult position, facing pressure from both sides—the community and family demanding justice, and the influential Khap panchayats supporting powerful officials within the system.

Background of the row

Senior IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar shot himself at his home on October 7th. He belonged to the Scheduled Caste community. Before his death, he left behind an 8-page suicide note and a 1-page will. In the suicide note, he detailed the persistent mental harassment and humiliation he faced.

He alleged that some senior officers had maliciously filed complaints, damaging his reputation and leading to his mental breakdown. This suicide note is also reported to allegedly name DGP Shatrujeet Kapur. An FIR was registered on Thursday against some officers mentioned in the note. The case has now taken a politically and socially sensitive turn.

The biggest challenge for the state government currently is to convince the family to allow the postmortem so the last rites can be performed. High-level meetings are ongoing for this purpose. According to sources, apart from offering compensation and a job for the daughter, other administrative assistance was also assured, but the family remains steadfast in their demand for justice.
