Bhopal— In a village in the capital region of Bhopal, 20 women have been elected unopposed as Panchs including the sarpanch [members and head of the panchayat or village council]. Ten kilometers away from Bhopal city, women are now in the driving seat of the Chhawani Adampur panchayat. For the first time here, the sarpanch and 20 panchs were elected uncontested. The most significant point is that they are all women.

Villager Krishna Rawat has been elected sarpanch. She is a post-graduate and holds an MA degree. Krishna has married only one and a half years ago. This is the first time here in this panchayat that the sarpanch has been elected unopposed and that women have been elected unopposed as panchayat members.

Chhawani Adampurpanchayat in the Bhopal district has a population of about 4,000. Earlier this panchayat also included Chhawani Patar village, which is now a separate panchayat, with a new panchayat formed here.

This panchayat in Bhopal is probably the first panchayat in the state, where the sarpanch and the panchayat members will all be women. All were elected unopposed, and the villagers held a meeting on this. The previous sarpanch was Sagunbai, but the panchayat members then also included men. Voting took place, however, in that election.

Why Krishna was elected unopposed as sarpanch!

Krishna Rawat has married one and a half years ago to Rohit Rawat of Chhawani Adampur. Krishna's brother-in-law Prashant Thakur was the deputy sarpanch last time. This time the post of sarpanch was reserved for OBC (open) [other backward class]. If Prashant had wanted to, he could have stood for election as sarpanch, but in a meeting held in the village for the purpose, he put forward the suggestion of having the daughter-in-law as sarpanch. It was decided in the village meeting that this time an educated woman should hold the reins of the panchayat. Upon which, they all agreed on the name of MA-pass Krishna. Along with the sarpanch, they also agreed that all the panchayat members should be women. In other words, the village panchayat entrusted the women with the responsibility of representing the village.

In a conversation withThe Mooknayak, Prashant said this idea struck him why should the women of the house not take hold of the reins as sarpanch. He talked about his idea with the family members. Everyone agreed that the daughter-in-law should become the sarpanch. After this, a meeting was held with the people of the village. They also agreed on the name of the daughter-in-law. The nomination for the sarpanch was filed on June 4. Until the last day of nomination, no one else besides Krishna came forward to stand for election.

The example set across the state

Prashant informed us after filing the nomination of daughter-in-law Krishna, they again consulted the people of the village. It was agreed to field only women for the 20 panch posts too. The village elders agreed to this. After which the entire election was completed unopposed.

Krishna, who was elected unopposed as the sarpanch, told The Mooknayak that there was no Anganwadi center in her village. "First of all, I will try for an Anganwadi. Arrangements will be made for pucca [paved] roads and proper drains to be constructed in the village. Improvements will be made in the running of the tap-water scheme. So that all houses have a water supply. Krishna said that she will do everything possible for the development of the village.
