Bhopal- Chandrashekhar Azad, the Member of Parliament from Nagina and chief of the Bhim Army, is facing serious allegations of sexual exploitation and emotional abuse from Dr. Rohini Ghawari, a Indian PhD scholar currently based in Switzerland.
The case has taken a dramatic turn, with Dr. Ghawari's parents publicly stating that if their daughter does not receive justice, they will be forced to stage a mass suicide protest outside the Parliament building in New Delhi.
According to Dr. Rohini Ghawari, the MP developed a relationship with her under the false pretence of marriage. She alleges that after gaining her trust, he sexually exploited her. When she attempted to raise her voice against the alleged mistreatment, she claims she was met with silence and inaction from both the police and the wider system.
The situation escalated recently when Dr. Ghawari, from Switzerland, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice her despair, even hinting at suicide. In one post, she wrote, “Today I will consume poison in your name, you have finished me.” In other posts, she directly tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the PMO, accusing the system of ignoring the pleas of "poor and Dalit daughters."
The Ghawari family alleges a complete failure of the justice system. Rohini's father, Shiv Ghawari, revealed that he personally met with the Delhi Police Commissioner after his daughter's distressing social media posts. He claims he was told that for a formal First Information Report (FIR) to be registered, Dr. Ghawari would need to be physically present in India.
Acting on this, Dr. Ghawari returned to India in August. However, her family states that despite her presence and the submission of evidence, no FIR has been filed. “We are told there are ‘no orders from above’ to take action,” Dr. Ghawari stated in a media interaction, calling the experience "humiliating and disappointing."
Her mother, Nutan Ghawari, questioned the government's commitment to women's safety, stating, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks about respecting women, but our daughter is being denied justice.”
Shiv Ghawari added a political dimension to the allegations, claiming that in 2022, Chandrashekhar Azad visited their home and offered him the position of Bhim Army's State President. Ghawari, who has affiliations with the Congress party, says he declined the offer. Later the family came to know that Azad and Rohini had developed intimacy and desired to marry. However, it was then known that Chandrashekhar was already married.
In response to the public allegations, legal counsel for Chandrashekhar Azad has served a defamation notice to Dr. Rohini Ghawari dated September 9. The notice asserts that the claims are false and have damaged the MP's reputation. The Ghawari family is now preparing a legal response to this notice.
With emotions running high and the family threatening an extreme form of protest, the case has put a spotlight on the challenges faced by victims in seeking justice against powerful figures.
