Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir: A women's self-help group has opened the first millet restaurant in Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to promote the consumption of healthy millets. The 'Krishna Millet' restaurant, located in the Pathwal area of Kathua district, serves a variety of dishes made with millets, maize, and ragi, including traditional dishes, dosas, and momos. The restaurant caters to all age groups, providing a unique opportunity for them to experience the nutritional benefits of millets.

The initiative is part of the Holistic Agriculture Development Program (HADP) 2024-25, which encourages the consumption of nutri-cereals like ragi and jowar. The restaurant aligns with the UN General Assembly's declaration of 2023 as the "International Year of Millet-2023".

Pooja, the leader of the women's self-help group, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "I have recently started this restaurant and am getting overwhelming response for opening it. Along with serving healthy food to the people, I also help in creating a better quality of living for our self-help group of ten women."

The restaurant serves organically prepared vegetables and chapattis made on the stove, offering a healthy and wholesome dining experience.

Kathua Additional District Development Commissioner, Surinder Mohan Sharma, praised the initiative, stating, "Opening of this restaurant is a very good initiative. As people develop a taste for coarse grains, it will be a better alternative to fast food. Due to the efforts of the Central government and state government, these women of self-help groups have emerged as an inspiration."

The 'Krishna Millet' restaurant is open from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. The restaurant is located in the Hiranagar area, which is adjacent to the International Border between India and Pakistan. Kathua's emergence as a leading millet producer highlights the region's potential in sustainable agriculture. The Millet Restaurant signifies the district administration's commitment to healthy lifestyles, women's empowerment, and sustainability.
