New Delhi— Reports of crimes against women and minor girls have been increasing year on year. According to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total of 4,28,278 cases of crimes against women were registered during 2021. Which indicates an increase of 15.3%when compared with 2020 (3,71,503 cases). According to these data, in 2021, a crime against a woman was registered on average every 74 seconds in the country.

Delhi on top of the crime list followed by Mumbai

With these figures, Delhi once again heads the crime list. In the country's capital, in2021, two minor girls were raped every 24 hours, that is every day, According to these NCRB data, Delhi is the most unsafe metro city for women.

A total of 13,892 cases of crimes against women were registered in 2021 in Delhi. In 2020, however, 9,782 cases were registered. According to these figures, there has been an increase of 40% in the cases of crimes against women in Delhi in one year.

Also in the last year, 3,948 cases of kidnapping, 4,674 cases of harassment, and 833 cases of rape of minor girls were registered in Delhi. Along with these data, the metro city of Delhi is not behind even in the case of dowry deaths.

According to the data, 136 dowry deaths were registered in Delhi in 2021. Which is 32.26% of the total deaths reported in the metros. A total of 8,664 dowry deaths were reported from across all the metro cities together. A total of 3,948 cases of kidnapping were registered in the same period.

With crimes against women consistently rising in Mumbai, it was at number 2 with 5,543 cases. Whereas 3,127 cases were reported in Bengaluru.

At the state level, as per the report, Assam, which is the state with the highest rate of crimes against women, the crime rate was 168.3%. Over 29,000 cases of crimes against women have been registered in the state in the last year.

Husband and his family: frequent perpetrators

In the majority of cases of crimes against women registered under the IPC (Indian Penal Code) (31.8%), the perpetrators are their husbands or his relatives. In addition, 17.6% cases of abduction of women, and 7.4% cases of rape of women were registered.

Crimes against minor girls are also rising

In terms of crimes against minor girls, according to the data, a total of 1,49,404 cases of crimes against minor girls were registered in 2021. Which indicates an increase of 16.2% since 2020, when 1,28,531 cases were reported. At the rate of 45%, most of these are child kidnapping cases. In 2020, 28.9 cases were registered per lakh of the child population. In comparison, in2021, 33.6 cases were registered per lakh of the child population.
