India's Telecom Resources Tighten Up on Spam Calls

New Delhi- In a move to curb the epidemic of spam calls, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has ordered all service providers to stop promotional calls from unregistered telemarketers.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, all access service providers (AS) must immediately stop making voice promotional calls from all unregistered senders or telemarketers. If any unregistered sender is found to be misusing its telecom resources for making commercial voice calls, it will be blacklisted by the originating access provider (i.e., the one that provides the call center) for a period of up to two years.

No new telecom resources will be allocated to such senders by any access provider during the period of blacklisting, the statement added. The ministry has also directed all unregistered senders using telecom resources to make commercial voice calls to citizens to be migrated to the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform within a month.
