India's Maritime Sector Gets Greener with New Tug Program

New Delhi- The Union Minister of Port Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, recently flagged the Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP) to assist in the transition of conventional diesel-powered tugs to greener and more sustainable alternatives. The initiative is expected to bring in positive returns for the country's maritime industry while also adhering to the government's environmental goals.

The GTTP is a key initiative under the "Panch Karma Sankalp" and is set to provide a boost to the domestic tug industry. Under the program, four major ports - Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, Deendayal Port Authority, Paradip Port Authority, and V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority - will be required to procure or charter at least two green tugs each. The first set of tugs will be battery-electric, powered by cleaner and more sustainable alternatives such as hybrid, methanol, and green hydrogen. The remaining tugs are expected to be powered by other emerging green technologies. The entire project is expected to involve an investment of around INR 1000 Crores.

Speaking on the launch, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said, "The Green Tug Transition Program is a pivotal initiative towards realizing our vision of a sustainable and green maritime sector in India. This program not only aligns with our environmental goals but also strengthens our commitment to 'Make in India,' promoting domestic innovation and manufacturing in the maritime industry."

The GTTP is a significant step in the government's efforts to make India's maritime sector globally competitive. The program not only seeks to promote sustainable practices but also create employment opportunities in the shipbuilding and ship design industry. It is expected that all tugs operating in Indian major ports will transition to green tugs by the end of 2040, paving the way for a greener future for the country's maritime industry.
