New Delhi- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz highlighted the deepening defense and security cooperation between their nations during a joint press conference in New Delhi today. The two leaders emphasized the growing strategic partnership between the two democracies, symbolized by new agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
One of the key agreements announced is the exchange of classified information, which PM Modi described as a "new step" in the deepening trust between the two nations. The leaders also highlighted the importance of the existing Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty in bolstering joint efforts to combat terrorism and separatism.
Both leaders expressed concerns over the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, emphasizing their shared commitment to global peace. PM Modi reiterated India's stance that war is never the solution and pledged the nation's readiness to contribute to peace efforts.
This visit marks Chancellor Scholz's third trip to India since assuming office in 2021, underscoring the momentum of the partnership under his leadership. PM Modi welcomed Chancellor Scholz and his delegation, stating, "This is your third visit to India, and fortunately, the first IGC of my third term as Prime Minister. In a way, this is a triple celebration of our friendship."
The biannual Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) served as a platform for the two leaders to discuss expanding collaboration in key areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and clean energy. PM Modi emphasized the importance of skilling and youth exchanges, highlighting the positive contributions of Indian youth to Germany's prosperity.
The IGC meeting also facilitated agreements on "Whole of Government" initiatives focusing on critical technologies, skills development, and innovation. The two leaders inaugurated the 18th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business 2024, emphasizing the burgeoning economic opportunities between the two nations.
Addressing the conference, PM Modi urged businesses to capitalize on India's economic growth, highlighting the nation's democratic system, demographics, demand-driven economy, and data revolution as key drivers of growth. He emphasized the role of artificial intelligence in India's development and global progress.
Chancellor Scholz echoed PM Modi's call for collective global action to address conflicts, urging political solutions based on international law. He stressed the importance of upholding international law and the principles of the UN Charter in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in light of maritime disputes and potential flashpoints.
