Bangladesh: Students to Launch Nationwide Non-Cooperation Movement

New Delhi- As Bangladesh witnesses its second week of violent protests against the recent killings in the country, the Students Movement against Discrimination on Friday announced a nationwide non-cooperation movement starting from Sunday. The movement is aimed at pressing home their nine-point demands.

Two coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement said that the countrywide non-cooperation movement will be a success if the people of Bangladesh come forward and unite. They have requested the people to make the movement a success by organizing it at roads, lanes, and wards.

After nearly two weeks, the country witnessed renewed violence on Friday, in which two people lost their lives and many others were injured. According to the reports, the clashes took place between the protesters and the personnel of the law enforcement agencies in Dhaka, Sylhet, Khulna, Chittagong, and Noakhali during the processions of the "student movement against discrimination".

The movement has received support from a number of prominent political parties of the country. The ruling Awami League (AL) has instructed its cadreans not to harass or detain the students. The general secretary of the AL, Obaidul Quader, said that the law enforcement agencies have been asked not to harass or detain the students unnecessarily. He also accused that even after fulfilling the students' demand for quota reform, a vested quarter is continuing to play the game of gaining interest by playing the government-versus-students game.
