Ranchi- Dr. Rose Kerketta passed away on April 17, 2025, in Ranchi at the age of 84. She had been ill for a long time. Her demise is an irreparable loss to literature, culture, and the tribal movement. A wave of grief swept across Jharkhand and the entire country following her passing.
Rose Kerketta was an eminent writer, poetess, thinker, educator, and a staunch advocate for tribal rights, known for her works in Hindi and Kharia languages. Born in Kasira Sundra Toli village, Simdega district, Jharkhand, on December 5, 1940, she belonged to the Kharia tribal community.
She completed her Master's degree (M.A.) in Hindi and made remarkable contributions to tribal language, literature, culture, and social justice. Affectionately called "Rose Di" in Jharkhand, her writings and social work brought national and international recognition to the issues of water, forest, land, and women's rights.
Dr. Rose Kerketta authored numerous significant works in Hindi and Kharia, highlighting tribal culture, traditions, and social struggles. Some of her notable works include:
Pagha Jori-Jori Re Ghato: One of her most celebrated works, this autobiographical narrative presents stories of tribal struggles, poverty, and victories against social injustices, emphasizing the preservation of tribal culture and heritage.
Stri Mahagatha Ki Mahaj Ek Pankti: This work poetically expresses the struggles and social status of women.
Biruwar Gamchha Tatha Anya Kahaniyan: A collection of stories reflecting various facets of tribal life.
Other Works: She wrote numerous poems, stories, and essays that hold a significant place in Hindi and Kharia literature. Her works sensitively depict the daily lives of tribal communities, their connection with nature, and social issues.
She also translated Premchand’s stories into Kharia, enriching Kharia literature. Her writings, imbued with sweetness and intellectual depth, inspired readers toward social consciousness.
Dr. Rose Kerketta actively worked for tribal rights, particularly on issues related to water, forest, and land. She was at the forefront of people’s movements and provided intellectual leadership to tribal communities. Her key social contributions include:
