Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh— In a poignant display of determination and helplessness, a specially-abled man in Azamgarh district carried his differently-abled wife on his back while entering the District Magistrate's office to demand a basic necessity — a road connecting their house to the main road.

The man, Ashok Kumar, has made this appeal to authorities for the second time, submitting a written application addressed to the District Magistrate of Azamgarh. The couple resides in an area that lacks proper road connectivity, making daily movement a struggle — especially for those with physical disabilities.

While the couple does own a motorized tricycle, it was reportedly low on battery, and due to the lack of accessible infrastructure like a functioning ramp, the couple was unable to use it to enter the premises. Witnesses stated that no assistance was offered by the DM office staff as Ashok Kumar carried his wife on his back up the ramp.

“This is not the first time I am asking for help,” said Ashok Kumar in his appeal. “I just want a road so that my wife and I can live with dignity and move around independently.”

The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many users questioning the insensitivity of local administration and the continued neglect of basic infrastructure for the differently-abled.

Activists and citizens alike are demanding swift action, urging the district administration to not only approve the construction of the requested road but also ensure public offices are accessible to all, especially to persons with disabilities.

The District Magistrate's office has yet to issue an official response regarding the complaint or the circulating video.

Public Reaction and Calls for Action

Social media users and activists have condemned the lack of empathy and support from the administration. "It's a shame that these differently-abled people had to approach the administration in such a condition," tweeted one user, echoing the sentiments of many. Others have called for immediate action, including the provision of motorized tricycles or wheelchairs and the construction of the requested road.

Infrastructure Challenges for the Disabled in India

The situation in Azamgarh is not isolated. According to the World Health Organization, over 15% of the global population, or approximately 1.3 billion people, experience some form of disability. In India, this translates to millions who face significant barriers to accessing public services and infrastructure. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, mandates the provision of accessible environments, yet implementation remains a challenge, particularly in rural areas.
