Ranchi- CM Hemant Soren's wife and MLA Kalpana Soren’s Maiya Samman Yatra has rapidly gained momentum as it sweeps through Jharkhand, capturing the attention of women voters and sparking a significant political wave. Starting from Banshidhar Nagar on September 23, the yatra is more than just an electoral campaign—it’s an effort to underscore the empowerment of women through the Soren government's welfare initiatives.

During a welcome event in Sonua, Kalpana Soren, the Gandey MLA, emphasized how women have been honored for the first time since Jharkhand's formation, attributing this achievement to the Hemant Soren government. She highlighted the Maiya Samman Yojana, a groundbreaking scheme where women aged 21 to 50 years receive ₹1,000 each month. According to her, this scheme is not just about financial aid; it is about recognizing the contribution of women, ensuring they have the resources to meet their needs, and empowering them to become self-reliant.

In Sonua, Kalpana Soren spoke not only in Hindi but also in the local languages—Odia, Santhali, and Ho—a move that resonated deeply with the audience, leading to rousing applause. Her effort to connect with the local population in their mother tongues added a personal touch, making the women feel seen and valued by the government. Kalpana urged the women to continue supporting the Maiya Samman Yojana, asking them to bless the Hemant Soren-led government for ensuring that this initiative continues.

The yatra is designed to communicate that the Hemant Soren administration is committed to the long-term welfare of women. Kalpana Soren has repeatedly reassured the attendees that the monthly ₹1,000 will continue to be deposited in their accounts, regardless of political challenges. She further dismissed accusations that the scheme is an election gimmick, asserting that it is a permanent feature of the Soren government’s commitment to women’s empowerment.

Kalpana Soren’s connection with the female electorate has been both symbolic and practical. She represents a strong female leader who is actively advocating for women’s financial independence. The scheme itself has been framed as a recognition of women's labor, a form of respect that no previous government had offered since Jharkhand's inception.

Widespread Support and Political Ramifications

The response from women voters has been overwhelmingly positive. Wherever the yatra stops, large crowds of women have gathered, voicing their support for the Maiya Samman Yojana. The scheme provides a sense of dignity and security to women, many of whom now have an independent income for the first time. This support has turned the yatra into a crucial political tool for the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in the lead-up to the elections.

The opposition, particularly the BJP, has been vocal in its criticism, calling the Maiya Samman Yatra a political stunt. BJP legislator C.P. Singh went as far as labeling it the "Maiya Apmaan Yatra," accusing the Soren government of betraying its original promise to provide ₹6,000 per month. However, the women present at these events appear less concerned with political debates and more focused on the tangible benefits they are receiving.

Kalpana’s consistent message that "your Hement Dada, your Hemant Beta" will continue to send them ₹1,000 every month has resonated deeply with the crowd, countering opposition arguments that the scheme is a temporary electoral ploy. Her speeches have painted the BJP as an obstacle to women’s happiness, portraying the opposition’s court petitions against the scheme as attempts to rob women of their hard-earned respect.

Government Initiatives Beyond Maiya Samman Yojana

In addition to the Maiya Samman Yojana, Kalpana Soren has used the yatra to remind women of the numerous other welfare schemes launched by the Hemant Soren government. These include the Savitribai Phule Pension Scheme, which provides financial security to elderly women; the Birsa Harit Gram Yojana, aimed at improving the livelihoods of rural women through agro-based industries; and the Guruji Credit Card Scheme, which offers easy credit to women for setting up small businesses.

At every stop, Kalpana reiterates how these programs are designed to uplift women, not just financially but socially and politically. She positions the Soren government as the first administration to truly understand the needs of women and take concrete steps to fulfill them.

The Maiya Samman Yatra, with its strategic focus on women voters, could indeed prove to be a masterstroke for the JMM. By placing women at the forefront of the political conversation and framing them as key decision-makers in the elections, Kalpana Soren is reshaping the political narrative in Jharkhand. As the yatra continues to gather support, it could significantly influence the outcome of the upcoming elections, placing women’s welfare and empowerment at the heart of Jharkhand’s political future.
