Hyderabad — In a strong rebuttal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent remarks regarding the implementation of the crop loan waiver in Telangana, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has shared detailed facts and figures, reaffirming his government's successful execution of the scheme.

The Prime Minister, during a public meeting in Maharashtra on October 5, had alleged that the Congress party in Telangana had failed to deliver on its promises and had kept farmers waiting for the loan waiver they had pledged during the elections.

Chief Minister Reddy expressed his disappointment over Modi's remarks, stating that they did not reflect the reality on the ground. "I am pained and astonished by such a statement," Reddy said, noting that the PM's claim about the Congress government failing to implement the crop loan waiver was misleading.

"Our government has not only fulfilled its promise but has also done so in record time. This loan waiver is not just a political promise, but a lifeline for our farmers, who have been facing financial distress," Reddy added.

Telangana’s Largest Farm Loan Waiver

In response, CM Reddy issued a statement highlighting the swift and effective implementation of the loan waiver, which was a key election promise made by the Congress party. According to the Chief Minister, the Congress government has successfully waived off loans of up to ₹2 lakh for 22,22,067 farmers, amounting to ₹17,869.22 crore—the largest farm loan waiver since the formation of Telangana. This waiver was implemented within just 27 days of coming into power, demonstrating the government's strong commitment to alleviating the financial burdens faced by farmers in the state.

The waiver was executed in three phases, as outlined below:

  • Phase 1: Disbursed on July 18, 2024, covering 11,34,412 loan accounts, with a total amount of ₹6,034.97 crore.

  • Phase 2: Disbursed on July 30, 2024, covering 6,40,823 loan accounts, with a total amount of ₹6,190.01 crore.

  • Phase 3: Disbursed on August 15, 2024, covering 4,46,832 loan accounts, with a total amount of ₹5,644.24 crore.

In total, ₹17,869.22 crore was transferred to cover crop loans up to ₹2 lakh, benefitting over 22 lakh farmers. CM Reddy emphasized that this was the largest loan waiver scheme since Telangana’s formation and was implemented in record time.

CM Revanth Reddy reiterated his government's commitment to ensuring that every eligible farmer in Telangana is debt-free. He further assured that for farmers with outstanding loans exceeding ₹2 lakh, the government would disburse the promised ₹2 lakh once the farmers clear the amount above this threshold.

The state government has earmarked ₹26,000 crore for this purpose for the current fiscal year and is prepared to allocate up to ₹31,000 crore to ensure the comprehensive execution of the crop loan waiver scheme.

CM Reddy also highlighted that the Telangana government has ensured full transparency in the loan waiver process. All relevant data, including the list of 22,22,067 beneficiary farmers, has been made available on the official website of the Telangana government.

He called for the Prime Minister’s cooperation and guidance in ensuring that the welfare of farmers remains a priority, rather than making unsubstantiated claims that undermine their confidence.
