New Delhi- The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) will contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections independently, announced BSP Chief Mayawati on X, formerly known as Twitter. The elections are scheduled for February 5th, 2025.
Mayawati expressed confidence in the party's performance, stating, "BSP is fighting this election on its own strength with full preparation and strength. It is expected that the party will definitely perform well in this election."
She emphasized the importance of fair elections, urging the Election Commission to ensure a free and fair process, devoid of communalism and misuse of government machinery. Mayawati stated, "Elections are the backbone of democracy, and as a party dedicated to the upliftment of the marginalised, we expect the Election Commission to ensure that these elections are free from communalism and other negative influences, including the misuse of government machinery."
Mayawati also appealed to voters to exercise their judgment wisely and support BSP candidates, dedicated to public interest and welfare. She urged voters to "not get swayed by any party's tempting promises and should use their votes wisely and vote only for the BSP party candidates who are dedicated to public interest and public welfare."
The BSP's decision comes amidst a political shift in Delhi. The AAP, aiming for a third term, is campaigning on its achievements in education and health. The BJP, on the other hand, has accused AAP leaders of corruption and misgovernance. They have fielded Parvesh Verma against Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat and Ramesh Bidhuri against Delhi CM Atishi in the Kalkaji seat.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the election schedule earlier this week. The single-phase election will occur on February 5th, with the counting of votes scheduled for February 8th. The last date for filing nominations is January 17th, with scrutiny taking place on January 18th. The final date for candidate withdrawal is January 20th.
