Bhadradri Kothagudem-  The National BC Dal has approached the Human Rights Commission seeking action against officials following a food poisoning incident at a government-run girls' hostel that left approximately 15 students hospitalised.

Dundra Kumara Swamy, National President of the National BC Dal and an advocate, lodged a formal complaint with the commission regarding the incident at the BC Gurukul Girls’ Hostel in Manuguru town.

According to the complaint, the girl students fell ill after consuming food served at the hostel mess. They were subsequently rushed to a nearby government hospital exhibiting symptoms of severe stomach pain and vomiting.

In his submission, Kumara Swamy described the incident as “deeply disturbing,” stating that it raises serious concerns about the safety and well-being of students in government residential institutions. He alleged that the episode points to gross negligence on the part of the authorities responsible for ensuring food safety and monitoring hostel facilities.

“Providing safe and nutritious food to students in government Gurukul institutions is a fundamental responsibility of the administration,” Kumara Swamy stated. He argued that the incident constitutes a violation of the students’ constitutional Right to Life and Right to Health. “The health and safety of students cannot be compromised, especially in institutions meant for the welfare of children from socially and economically weaker sections,” he added.

The complaint urges the Human Rights Commission to order an independent and comprehensive inquiry into the matter. It specifically calls for strict action against the responsible officials, including suspension where necessary.

Furthermore, the National President has recommended the constitution of a special monitoring committee to conduct inspections across all Gurukul hostels in the state. This committee would be tasked with ensuring food quality, hygiene standards, and health safety measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

Emphasising the urgency of the matter, Kumara Swamy appealed to the commission to ensure justice for the affected students and to strengthen safeguards to protect the rights of children in residential institutions.
