New Delhi- Amidst the bustling campaign activities leading up to the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections, slated for May 25 across all seven Lok Sabha seats of Delhi, a significant event unfolded. Transperson Rajan Singh made a bold statement by arriving on foot, clad only partially, to file their nomination for the South District Lok Sabha seat on Friday. Trekking from Sangam Vihar to Saket, Rajan's journey symbolized not just a physical endeavor but also a powerful protest against ongoing discrimination.

Following the nomination process, Rajan expressed disappointment over the lack of police protection despite a court order mandating it five days prior. Their frustration was compounded by a recent attack, which, regrettably, went unaddressed by the authorities.

In a conversation with The Mooknayak, Rajan highlighted the glaring disparity between the ideal of equality and the reality faced by the third gender community in Delhi. "In Delhi, the principle of equality should apply to every individual. However, discrimination against the third gender persists despite our legal recognition. How much longer must transgenders endure such injustice?"

Rajan's resolve to challenge this discrimination was evident in their call for action. "Our battle has begun. We advocate for the provision of separate toilets in hospitals, metro stations, and other public spaces. It is imperative that every government office and institution joins us in this endeavor. Discrimination persists, and I stand as a living testament to this truth."

Security not provided even after a court order!

"On April 29, the Delhi High Court had assured me of police security. However, despite the court's order, security measures were not implemented, solely because of my status as a third gender individual. This disregard for our safety prompted my decision to file my nomination in a semi-nude state. I chose to go half-naked to Parliament as a stark reflection of how society views us - as inherently 'naked' and vulnerable." - Rajan elucidated.

Before submitting the nomination, Rajan articulated the enduring struggle for equality and representation. "Even after 75 years of independence, our community still lacks reservation, despite the constitutional guarantee of equality. I am contesting this election to advocate for our rightful demand of one percent reservation in the Lok Sabha, Assembly, and other governing bodies. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi champions the advancement of women, we, the LGBTQIA community, seek to collaborate with him for our collective progress."

Reflecting on milestones achieved and challenges ahead, Rajan remarked, "The NALSA judgment of 2014 marked our initial freedom. The enactment of the Transgender Protection Act in 2019 was another significant step. Perhaps enrolling with the District Magistrate will signify our third freedom."

Rajan's personal struggles further highlights the systemic neglect faced by the transgender community. "I lack a permanent residence; sometimes, I even resort to sleeping in my office. While attempting to enroll yesterday, the absence of a magistrate, the absence of a queue for transgender individuals, and the lack of gender-neutral facilities paint a grim picture of our societal condition." - Rajan lamented, questioning the prevailing power dynamics and societal norms.
