New Delhi- To ensure smoother traffic flow on National Highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has implemented a GIS-based software to monitor around 100 toll plazas in real time. This initiative, managed by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), aims to reduce congestion at toll plazas by providing live updates and tracking traffic conditions.

The toll plazas selected for this monitoring system were identified based on congestion feedback received through the 1033 National Highway helpline. The software offers detailed information such as the live status of queue lengths, total waiting time, and vehicle speed at toll plazas. It will also alert officials when congestion exceeds the prescribed limits and recommend lane distribution adjustments to optimize traffic flow.

The GIS-based software is linked to NHAI’s field offices across the country, allowing officials to analyze traffic conditions on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Additionally, the system will provide updates on current weather conditions and local festivals, enabling proactive measures to manage traffic.

This real-time monitoring system is designed to improve the overall tolling experience and ensure a hassle-free journey for National Highway users. NHAI plans to expand this service to more toll plazas in the future.
