New Delhi- Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi tonight at the age of 92. He was admitted to the hospital earlier today following a sudden loss of consciousness at his home.

Dr. Singh, renowned as an economist and the architect of India's economic reforms, served as the country's Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. He was widely recognized for his transformative role in liberalizing the Indian economy during his tenure as Finance Minister in the P.V. Narasimha Rao government from 1991 to 1996. These reforms are credited with modernizing India's economy and integrating it into the global market.

During his time as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh oversaw consistent economic growth, poverty reduction, and strengthened India's global standing. His government also implemented significant legislation in areas like education, food security, and information technology.

Dr. Singh, a humble and intelligent man, was respected in India and internationally. Generations will remember his contributions to economics and public service.

The AIIMS confirmed Dr. Singh's death in a statement, saying, "With profound grief, we inform the demise of former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26. Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the medical emergency at AIIMS. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9.51 p.m."

Dr. Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced shortly.

Leaders from across the political spectrum and around the world have paid tribute to Dr. Singh's legacy, highlighting his contributions to economics and public service.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the death of former PM. Taking to X, PM Modi wrote: "India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives."
