Garland, Texas – In a historic confluence of faith and freedom, the Ambedkarite Buddhist Association of Texas (ABAT) has announced the grand opening of the Mahabodhi International Buddhist Center in Garland, Texas. Scheduled for Saturday, July 4, the inauguration not only marks the first branch of the revered Mahabodhi Society (Bengaluru) in the United States but also coincides with the 250th anniversary of American independence, symbolizing a shared journey toward liberty, equality, and compassion.
The new center is envisioned as more than a place of worship; it is intended to be a sanctuary for meditation, mindfulness, and social harmony, deeply rooted in the teachings of Lord Buddha and the social justice ideals of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. Organizers from ABAT describe the event as a landmark moment for North American Buddhism, promising to bring together a truly international gathering. Over twenty Buddhist monks from diverse traditions and ethnic backgrounds including representatives from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States are expected to attend, alongside Ambedkarite communities and local American devotees.
Adding to the spiritual significance, two distinguished Buddhist leaders, Ven. Bhante Kassapa and Ven. Bhante Ananda, will travel from Bengaluru, India, to bless the occasion and lead Dhamma teachings. The morning session, to be held at 5525 Myers Drive in Garland, will feature a Buddha statue inauguration ceremony, traditional Buddha Pooja, communal chanting, Dhamma talks, and the offering of Dana to the Sangha. Following the spiritual observances, the celebration will move to 5210 Locust Grove for an afternoon program that includes a community lunch, cultural performances, and inspirational speeches, with local dignitaries and representatives from the City of Garland also expected to attend.
ABAT leaders emphasized that the establishment of the Mahabodhi International Buddhist Center is a historic step toward creating a lasting spiritual home for Buddhist education and cultural exchange in the United States. “This center is not only a place of worship, but also a symbol of compassion, wisdom, social justice, and global harmony,” organizers said, extending a warm welcome to people of all backgrounds to join the joyous celebration. The event will run from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and community members can register or find more information through the ABAT website at https://www.abatusa.org.
ABAT is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Buddhist teachings, social equality, compassion, mindfulness, and community service inspired by the ideals of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and the Buddha’s Dhamma.
