Visakhapatnam- Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, has expanded the Digi Yatra facility to nine more airports, with the official inauguration taking place at Visakhapatnam International Airport. The virtual launch also extended the service to eight other Airports Authority of India (AAI) managed locations: Coimbatore, Dabolim, Indore, Bagdogra, Ranchi, Patna, Raipur, and Bhubaneshwar.
The Digi Yatra system streamlines the airport experience by eliminating the need for physical documents like boarding passes and ID proofs. According to the minister, this innovation has reduced passenger entry time from 15 seconds to just 5 seconds. The Digi Yatra app has already seen over 55 lakh downloads, and more than 3 crore passengers have utilized the service for their travels.
First introduced in December 2022 at New Delhi, Varanasi, and Bengaluru airports, the Digi Yatra initiative now covers 24 airports across the country with these new additions.
Naidu highlighted the system’s significance, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as it enables contactless and paperless airport processing. This initiative supports sustainability in the aviation sector by reducing paper usage.
To address privacy concerns, the minister assured passengers that their personal data is secure. Digi Yatra does not store information centrally; all data is encrypted and remains only on passengers' smartphones. The information is temporarily shared with the departure airport and deleted within 24 hours after the flight.
Digi Yatra, part of the government’s digital initiative, leverages Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) to enhance the passenger experience, offering a seamless and efficient process through airport checkpoints.
