RG Kar tragedy: Another face of junior doctors' movement under Bengal medical council's scanner

Kolkata – Kinjal Nanda, a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital and a popular figure in Bengali television and advertising, is under scrutiny by the West Bengal Medical Council. The West Bengal Medical Council is examining whether Nanda managed his acting and advertising assignments while fulfilling his responsibilities as a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, considering that post-graduate trainees have fewer annual leaves than senior doctors.

The council's action follows a recent incident involving another junior doctor at the same hospital, Ashfaqualla Naiya. Earlier this month, Naiya was accused of practicing ENT privately without the required certification. Unlike Naiya, Nanda has not been issued a show-cause notice. Instead, the council has sent a communique to R.G. Kar authorities expressing concerns about Nanda's management of his time between his hospital duties and his outside commitments.

The communique, also copied to the state health department and the state secretariat, specifically asks whether Nanda obtained permission for his acting and advertising work. It also questions whether he fulfilled the mandatory 80% attendance requirement for post-graduate trainees.

As of now, Nanda claims to be unaware of the council's inquiries.
