Madhya Pradesh: AIIMS Animal House Ready, Rats and Rabbits to Undergo Cancer and Diabetes Drug Trials

Bhopal- In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, drug trials involving rats are currently underway, with preparations for research into the treatment of serious diseases ongoing at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Research efforts at AIIMS are focusing on utilizing drugs in rats for Ayurvedic treatments targeting cancer, diabetes, depression, and N1H1.

According to available information, AIIMS is engaged in two national-level projects in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). To support these projects, various species of rats and rabbits have been acquired. In addition to seeking cures for cancer and diabetes, researchers are also investigating the side effects of allopathic treatments using rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits.

Research on all types of allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines is underway here. Guinea pigs are expected to arrive soon, and preparations are also being made for the arrival of rabbits and hamster rats, which will be used for drug trials and research purposes.

In addition to drug trials for cancer and diabetes, AIIMS Bhopal is also conducting research on the combined effects of allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines. Three types of Ayurvedic medications are currently undergoing trials for the treatment of diabetes. Rats, induced with cancer and diabetes, are being administered these medications to observe their effectiveness and potential side effects.

Furthermore, AIIMS is investigating the potential side effects of combining allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines. This research aims to determine the optimal dosage of both types of medication to minimize adverse effects. AIIMS management plans to expand the animal research facilities in the future to accommodate the increasing number of animals needed for such research.

An animal house has been established at AIIMS Bhopal to facilitate these studies. Megha Katare Pandey, the Animal House in-charge, highlighted the development of a Vivo Imaging System at AIIMS. This system enables optical imaging for studying the effects of drugs on cancer, gene expression targeting, disease spread, and the treatment of viral-bacterial infections.

The Vivo Imaging System is equipped to capture multiple images and record live reports of experimental organisms directly onto the computer. This technological advancement enhances the efficiency and accuracy of research endeavors.

In a groundbreaking move, AIIMS Bhopal is opening its doors to students from outside the state, allowing them to conduct research in the Animal Lab for the first time. Currently, two students from MANIT are actively engaged in their studies here, contributing to the diverse research landscape of AIIMS Bhopal.

Dr. Megha Katare confirmed that the facilities are fully operational at AIIMS Bhopal. Research activities encompass a wide range of studies involving both allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines.

Speaking to The Mooknayak, Dr. Ajay Singh, Director of AIIMS Bhopal, emphasized the importance of preliminary testing on rats before progressing to larger animal models and eventually human trials.

This step ensures that the findings obtained from rat studies provide valuable insights into the safety and efficacy of medications, which are essential for their potential use in human treatment. To support this crucial phase of research, AIIMS Bhopal has established a dedicated animal house facility.
