Varanasi - Following the deadly stampede at the Maha Kumbh on January 29, Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief Ajay Rai has vehemently criticized the state government, alleging negligence and inaction. The incident claimed the lives of at least 30 pilgrims and left 60 others injured.

Speaking to media, Rai expressed his condolences to the victims' families and placed the blame squarely on the government's shoulders. Ajay Rai criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for its negligence and inaction, particularly the officials, including the commissioner, who told people to "get up and walk" during the tragedy. Rai asserted that the "entire administration and the government have failed" and bear the primary responsibility for the event.

Rai also challenged the official death toll, claiming the true figure is much higher. He cited the extensive debris, including tractors, shoes, and clothing collected from the site as evidence. "From this, it’s clear the numbers are far higher than reported," he stated, estimating the death toll to be over a hundred.

Looking ahead, Rai criticized the upcoming Union Budget 2025, scheduled for presentation by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1. He predicted the budget would be detrimental to farmers, laborers, the middle class, small businesses, youth, and women, claiming it would bring hardships and exacerbate existing challenges. Key reforms to boost growth and revamp the tax structure are expected in the Union Budget 2025.
